The Internet is unregulated, and anarchic,
but as with any society, there are still conventions to be followed. Many people
spend a lot of time helping others via the Internet with no expectation of a reward.
Today many people make it harder for this to happen by their carelessness and ignorance
in how they use the medium. In most areas of the Internet, "newbies" are
usually welcomed and treated patiently - but as the numbers of Internet users soar,
so does the time wasted by poor practice.
It is worthwhile getting to grips with at
least the basics "netiquette"
before bravely stolling in where angels fear to tread - and then discovering you
have put your foot in it. Please note the classic reference on this topic is slightly
old. Where it talks about Newsgroups, most people today use E-mail lists instead.
By and large the principles are the same.
A simpler netiquette
guide may be more relevant and easier for those just starting out. Each of these seems
to have suggestions not in the other.
